What is CMYK?
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (in printing terms, black is called the "Keyline"). Much like your inkjet printer at home, this printing process starts by separating an image file into these four colors, converting the image to halftones (tiny dots), and then printing each layer individually to recreate the image. This how most magazines and publications are printed. When screenprinted at poster size, the result is a warm, saturated image with a vintage look.
What if I'm not happy with the result?
The initial consult is a no-obligation conversation. I will do my best to provide realistic expectations up front, including examples of finished CMYK prints so you can see all the quirks and qualities typical of this process. If you decide not to begin the project, there will be no charge.
If you do move forward, there are no refunds. I will share updates and photos throughout the process, and it is sometimes possible to make some adjustments along the way, which we can discuss as needed.
If I make a mistake or produce a print that is below my standards, that's on me. I'll fix it at no additional charge.
When do I pay?
Payment is required at the consult once you decide to move forward. You can pay by cash, check, or Venmo.
Can I get more than 5 editions?
Of course! Additional prints are $10 each to cover materials.
Can I get fewer than 5 editions?
Yes. I will provide a revised quote at the consultation if you want fewer editions.
How do you determine pricing?
A typical CMYK process print takes 8-10 hours total including the preparation of digital files, preparing and reclaiming screens, printing, and trimming the final prints. Pricing covers these steps plus materials.
What if I only want a one- or two-color print?
Bring any and all ideas. Photos can be printed in a single color or a selection of non-CMYK colors if you want an abstract result. We can discuss this during the consult and I will develop an appropriate quote for you.
Tell me more about printing with you.
Screenprinting is a blast and I welcome customers to join me in the studio to work on their project. CMYK is a four-step process, which means there are four (and sometimes five) printing sessions, usually not on the same day. You can come to one or more of these as your schedule allows - I usually print in the evenings and on weekends. Coffee and/or beer & wine provided.
Do you offer framing?
No, but I am happy to deliver finished prints to a local (Amesbury/Newburyport) framer of your choice, or recommend one if needed. Otherwise, prints will be delivered flat (not in a tube) and packaged in cardboard.
